How Does Sugar Affect My Body?
It’s a common known fact that sugar is overall bad for your body. But did you know that your body actually needs sugar to give energy to the cells in your blood?
The sugar that your body needs to function is not the same type of sugar found in desserts, snack foods, and almost all processed foods and drinks in the world. Your body needs natural sugar that is founds in fruits and vegetables.
When your food is digested it is breaking down nutrients that your body needs to function. These nutrients include carbohydrates, triglycerides, and glycogen. When going through the digestion process, those nutrients are turned into glucose, which is then stored in your body for energy for your brain. The cells in your body need glucose to survive. In fact, a lack of glucose in your body can cause you to lose consciousness and pass out.
But how much sugar do I need to meet my body’s requirements without exceeding the limit I should have each day?
According to the American Heart Association, the recommended daily intake of sugar is 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men. On average, people are consuming 22 teaspoons of sugar every day! This is in addition to the natural glucose that is stored in your body from the digestion process. This is bad for your health because your body is going to adjust to needing that amount of sugar on a regular basis to perform at the same level as normal. This over consumption of sugar has become a huge problem in the United States, leading to millions of cases of obesity, especially in children.
If your diet consists of a lot of sugary products, you could be damaging the cells in your body and even affecting how your brain performs its basic cognitive functions, like memory and focus. The best solution is to cut out food and drinks that are high in sugar out of your diet. Switch to a more organic diet and get the sugars your body needs from fresh fruit and vegetables. Try shopping at local organic food stores like Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and your local famers markets. Eliminating processed foods and unnatural sugar from your body will maximize the way your body functions and you will notice a big difference in how you feel on a daily basis.
