According to recent studies, many countries in South Asia proved that turmeric provides many health benefits. Also, it can be used to prevent both cancer and dementia. Thus, why is turmeric, a plant in the ginger family, so crucial for our health?
Curcumin is the main ingredient in turmeric; this compound also helps give turmeric it’s deep orange color. It has been used for a long time in Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani medicines. This medicine is well known for treating dementia and cancer. In 2009, the World Alzheimer’s Report concluded that just 3.6 percent of South Asia’s population over the age of 60 suffer from dementia, compared to about 7.2 percent of Western European’s population. Similarly, India’s population has the lowest percentage of people who have cancer compared to the west.

The studies use animals as their subjects and in 2006 an investigation revealed that curcumin helps to inhibit the growth of colon cancer in human beings.
In regards to Alzheimer’s disease, many researchers claim that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin are capable of breaking down the amyloid plaques in the brain that can lead to Alzheimer’s. If the blood vessels in the brain are cleared, more oxygen will be fed to the brain, and this could boost the overall function of the brain.

Studies on animals revealed that curcumin helps to reduce the cholesterol level in the body and prevent the growth of plaque that blocks the arteries. The natural anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin are used to treat some health problems such as eye inflammation, inflammatory bowel disease, and multiple sclerosis. Also, it helps to fight against flu and colds, enhances healthy indigestion, helps to improve glucose control in diabetes patients, and decreases symptoms of bloating and gas.
